Dr Kirstin Barchia

Clinical Psychologist

BPsych(Hons), MaClinPsych, PhD

About

Kirstin is a warm and professional psychologist who genuinely cares for the people she works with. She seeks to provide a safe, professional and confidential space for people to share their thoughts and feelings openly. She has a non-judgemental approach seeking to understand each person and their context.

Kirstin recognises that life is busy and finding time to seek support is difficult. With this in mind she seeks to provide therapy services that are based on scientific evidence of effectiveness while tailoring therapy to each individual, their life and experiences. She bases her approach on research on calming emotions, relationships, brain development, neuroplasticity (brain change), and resilience. Facilitating understanding of the causes of emotions and behaviours is an important part of the therapeutic approaches that inform her work (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Schema Therapy).

Kirstin is focused on helping the people she works with feel comfortable and at ease. She adapts her approach when working with clients of different ages for example using drawing and play with young children. She knows that adolescents often need some time to feel comfortable and has a non-confrontational approach to getting to know the young people she works with. Kirstin understands that adults also need time to feel at ease and allows them the space to ask questions and present their concerns. Kirstin has a strengths based approach to working with people of all ages and is just as concerned with the areas of strength and passion of the individuals she works with as the problems they come with.

Kirstin has over 15 years of experience working in public and private settings including private practice, schools, hospitals and universities providing therapy, workshops, lecturing, teaching and research. In her private practice in Newport, Kirstin provides psychological therapy services to children, adolescents, families and adults who are requiring support and understanding.  Kirstin is a member of the Australian Psychological Society and is registered to provide clinical psychology services under Medicare. Kirstin is a fully registered psychologist with AHPRA and has clinical psychology endorsement, she is also registered with AHPRA to provide supervision to training psychologists.
